Ignorance over the amount of time required for successful IT projects or tasks--resulting in short notice requests that can be impossible to meet--is the most common 'pain' for the UK's IT departments. This is the key finding of a survey by ORSYP, the expert in IT operations management.
ORSYP questioned European prospect organisations, including UK-based companies, and ranging from major banks and financial institutions to retailers, about which factors were the most constant frustrations for them in managing their IT operations. The key question asked was 'what is the most significant pain for you in ensuring that your if operations are managed successfully on a daily basis?' While many of the answers were perhaps predictable and centred on issues such as justifying IT investment and securing computer systems, human factors and a lack of understanding of the nature of IT challenges by business were the most common answers given. The survey was carried out during February and March 2003
The top 10 reasons cited were:
1. Lack of involvement of IT operations personnel in business projects at the initial planning stage and very short notice given for IT rollouts, systems changes and urgent tasks without first taking into account if challenges
2. Continued cuts or freezes in IT budgets due to tough economic conditions
3. Business constraints creating an ever-changing IT environment, often without the required level of IT planning before decisions are made
4. Increased complexity of IT environment to manage, and administrate, particularly for routine data processing
5. Security of IT systems, particularly for disaster recovery, data integrity and use of Internet-based applications
6. Need to align if with business objectives, particularly improving IT systems to meet internal Service Level Agreements (SLAs)
7. Justification of IT investment by showing clear return: IT operations teams have to contribute to business efficiency, but do not always have the tools to allow them to measure the business-wide returns on their investment in doing so
8. Skills balance, in that more general skills are needed for if management and specialists must interact with these generalises before commencing projects 9. Managing downtime, both carrying out maintenance procedures within strict time windows and coping with unplanned outages
10. Greater mobility of workforce, while still being able to provide service and security assurances without excessive investment
